"Jesus answered, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life...'"
John 14:6[i]

"United Methodists profess the historic Christian faith in God, incarnate in Jesus Christ for our salvation and ever at work in human history in the Holy Spirit."[ii]

We believe that the first step in the Christian life is faith in God’s work through Jesus Christ for our salvation. This is why “Know Christ” is the first phrase in our church motto. Knowing Christ is the beginning of a new life with God.

The word salvation is overused and misunderstood in our culture. Yet as United Methodists we believe that by looking back to great women and men of faith from the past, we enrich our ability to understand what God truth God is communicating to us.
This is one reason why United Methodists will often quote John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, to add strength to what we are teaching.

On the topic of salvation Wesley in his sermon titled The Scripture Way of Salvation explained salvation this way. “So that the salvation which is here spoken of (in Ephesians 2:8 You are saved by God’s grace because of your faith) might be extended to the entire work of God, from the first dawning of grace in the soul till it is consummated in glory.”[iii]

We believe that salvation is a process, not simply a moment in time.
